Day 8 - Learning about business

9:00pm

Today, we spent another day in the store! We began at 11:00am, right as Remy was opening up the boutique for the day. It was a slow start to the day, with fewer people coming to shop or just browse, so it gave us time to do some work with Remy on her computer. Remy was on the hunt to find some of the pictures she had from a photoshoot back in 2014, so it took some time to locate those files on her laptop. As we began to sort through her downloads and saved items on her desktop, we figured out a system that could better organize her google drive to make it a more efficient and easy process for her. Libby and I took a short break for lunch at about 1:15pm and walked to a nearby cafe called Tatte on Charles Street. We sat outside, got some coffee to refuel, and then headed back to the store. Once we got back, Remy had begun looking at her orders for the summer and fall collections of her favorite brands. She showed us the website she uses to order her inventory called NuOrder, where she can create her own database and add clothes from brands she’s connected with to her cart and complete orders. We scrolled through the preview lookbooks of fall collections for a couple brands and listened as she explained which pieces she loved, and how they can often be different from pieces she knows will sell well at the store. There’s a psychology aspect about pricing the items as well, and Remy explained how she re-prices items to make the profit that she needs. At around 3:00pm, more customers began to come in looking for specific items such as an appropriate dress for a son’s bar mitzvah, an outfit for a Napa Valley wedding, or just some new pieces for the summer days ahead. Libby and I helped customers on the floor so that Remy could prepare for her upcoming trip to Nantucket by organizing inventory in the basement and choosing what she wanted transfer over there. We sold a black dress by the brand called Kleid, to a very nice woman who was looking for an easy look for spring. Once Remy was finished in the basement, Libby and I helped move all the bins of clothing and accessories outside to be loaded into Remy’s car! Overall, it was a very successful day and we learned a LOT about the business side of Remy!
